From the Group Chat: Justin and Hailey Bieber, Labubus, Kate Winslet’s Daughter

EDITOR’S NOTE

Happy Sunday. The best part of a long weekend? I probably should say sleeping in, more time with family, etc — but, if I’m being honest, it’s extra scrolling. So, without further ado, here is the propaganda I’m not falling for this week:

Deeply important information

💊  Consider this more proof that the supplement industry knows no bounds: It’s coming for...your vagina. Yes, you read that right.

🤔 Want to look like a haunted Victorian child this summer? You’re in luck, because the season’s hottest dress is fit for Nosferatu.

💇‍♀️ Call your stylist — the bouncy, layered look of this ’90s TV character is quickly replacing “The Rachel” haircut.

Who in their right mind would wear soccer cleats on the streets? Gen Z, that’s who. Red cards for all.

🧤 If you’re not sporting sun gloves this summer, you’re doing it wrong. Deborah Vance would be proud.

I can't look away.
Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber

Class, gather round for How Not to Respond to Your Wife’s Major Career Milestone 101. On Tuesday, Hailey Bieber made her solo debut on the cover of Vogue, opening up about her wellness routine and her “scary” birth experience, which is putting it…mildly. But rather than marking the moment with your standard Wife-Guy post (“Congrats, goo goo” would have sufficed), Justin Bieber shared a story that he probably — read: definitely — should’ve kept to himself. Recalling a “huge fight” the two had, Justin wrote in an Instagram caption, “I told hails that she would never be on the cover of vogue.” Then, in a sudden moment of self-awareness, he added, “Yikes I know, so mean.” Naturally, a good portion of the internet agreed (“you couldn’t waterboard this information out of me lmao,” one person commented), and some compared it to a (much kinder) post he made for one of Kendall Jenner’s Vogue covers. Even People and Vanity Fair (politely) described his reaction as “bizarre.” That might explain why, hours later, the Man Who Pioneered a New Way To Wear Hats seemingly deleted the caption and replaced it with a few carefully curated emoji — which, if you squint hard enough, could be something resembling an apology.

Now, this is hardly the first time that Justin’s cryptic Instagram missives and general behavior have raised eyebrows and sparked concern. See: Justin’s public beef with his own fashion brand, this tense confrontation with paparazzi, videos of Justin partying at Coachella, and this 13-video, face-filtered Instagram carousel. (For the record, in February, a rep for the Biebers told TMZ that the chatter about his well-being was proof “people are committed to keeping negative, salacious, harmful narratives alive.”) Nor is it the first time that the couple’s social media activity has ramped up speculation about the state of their marriage (never forget when they unfollowed and re-followed each other, then blamed it on a hack and glitch). Seven years into their marriage, practically anything they do is spun as evidence of an impending split — something Hailey addressed for, oh, the 3000th time in her Vogue interview, calling it “a mindfu*k” and “not real.” At least, based on her unexpectedly funny “In the Bag” video, she’s a good sport.

Please explain: Labubus??
Purse with Labubus attached

What do Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Lisa from BLACKPINK have in common? Sure, they’re all stars. But they’re also card-carrying members of the Labubus fan club. Labu-who, you ask? Labubus — the furry, snaggletoothed, gremlin-looking toys that are always female (love that for them) and often seen attached to the handbags of celebs (Queen of Questionable Dolls Emma Roberts is a devotee), middle schoolers, and just about everyone else. These weirdly cute creatures are so in demand that new releases sell out in minutes, in-store lines have been compared to “literally the Hunger Games,” and there’s a secondary market filled with bidding wars, price gouging, knockoffs (aptly named Lafufus), and tiny outfits. Not to mention, InStyle boldly declared them “summer’s must-have fashion trend.” All of which leads us to the obvious question: Why?? Some point to the thrill of the typical blind-box packaging (think: opening your Happy Meal as a kid and seeing what toy you got). Or, perhaps it’s because people identify with the fact that, according to one article, they “have nothing but good intentions, [yet] sometimes inevitably end up in a pickle.” Of course, it could also be that they’re simply the latest iteration of “emotional support accessories.” Wonder why we’d need those.

Wait, who is this nepo baby?
Mia Threapleton and Kate Winslet

What’s that saying: Like mother, like daughter? That certainly seems to be the case for Mia Threapleton. Last week, the 24-year-old daughter of Kate Winslet and director Jim Threapleton made her Cannes red carpet debut — and it quickly became clear that she inherited more than her mom’s iconic beauty mark. Not only did Mia show up in a dress-code defying gown that resembled Winslet’s 1998 Oscars number (she swears, “it wasn’t intentional”), but she’s already been dubbed “Wes Anderson’s Next Breakout Star.” A few other things to know about the up-and-coming actress? As a child, Mia wanted to be a marine biologist — until she realized, “I can’t do math, and I’m rubbish at science.” It wasnt until she was 10 that she discovered just how famous her mom was...at, of all places, a literary festival. Her favorite Winslet film isnt Titanic (Mia, we dont understand), but this other classic. And shes never had social media and claims she never will (must be nice). Still, one question remains: Does she have her mother’s mastery of accents?

What are the sandals we like again?
Crocs Miami Toe Loop Sandal

Crocs Miami Toe Loop Sandal

Caroline, senior commerce editor, here. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d say Crocs are making some of the chicest sandals on the market — but here we are. My colleague Abby introduced me to these toe loop sandals, and my first thought was that they were reminiscent of the Teva sandals that Mary-Kate Olsen has worn (obviously, a good start). Then I realized the strappy, minimalist aesthetic would nicely complement all the baggy pants and maxi skirts I’m seeing a lot of this season. Plus, they’re waterproof and have a comfortable, molded footbed (once a Croc, always a Croc), so they’re also ideal for the pool, beach, and wherever else I end up.

need something to watch
nine perfect strangers

If you’ve been itching for a new escapist thriller à la Mike White, look no further. After becoming Hulu’s most-watched premiere, Nine Perfect Strangers is back for season two with more drama, more trauma, and unorthodox therapy that gets a lot more…experimental. Nine new guests — played by a star-studded cast — arrive at Masha's (Nicole Kidman) retreat in the mystical Austrian Alps. What starts as a journey of self-improvement and healing between strangers, turns into a twisted series of events where they realize they may not be so different after all. Grab your popcorn and get ready for an ending you won’t see coming.*
