From the Group Chat: Dakota Johnson’s “Materialists” Press Tour, Glen Powell’s Ex, and Pitbull Fans

EDITOR’S NOTE

Hi. To put it plainly, theres been a lot of news this weekend. Escalating attacks between Israel and Iran, and a pair of targeted shootings in Minnesota — one in which Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and another in which a Democratic state senator and his wife were wounded — are both developing stories. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called the shootings “an act of targeted political violence.” We’ll have more in tomorrow’s Daily Skimm.

In the meantime, please excuse the hard pivot: I’m traveling next week and, in a rare act of foresight, I actually started my packing list before the night before. Here’s what’s making the cut:

Meanwhile, I could be offered 10 free checked bags and I’d still skip:

 Dakota Johnson

Three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and Dakota Johnson giving us a chaotically good press tour. Lately, America’s First Nepo Baby has been making the rounds for the new rom-com Materialists — or, as one person so eloquently put it, “challengers for millennials” — and has delivered all the delightfully unbothered, relentlessly dry, and playfully deadpan moments we’ve come to expect. We enter into evidence: Johnson’s discovery that Alix Earle and Alex Cooper are in fact two different people (it is objectively confusing); her dating nonnegotiable (someone check on Chris Martin); her surprising 50 Shades of Grey injury; and her firm belief that men should not wear this one thing (Dakota, we thank you). Plus, she admitted to lying to friends about liking their home decor (relatable), not knowing who Edward Cullen and Jacob Black are (less relatable), and always being “psyched up” for filming sex scenes (which, to be clear, is a joke).

Of course, this is incredibly on-brand for the woman who claimed she could easily sleep 14 hours, described working on The Office finale as the “worst time of my life,” and — lest you forget — famously called out Ellen DeGeneres on her own show. Naturally, it raises the question: Is Johnson the most honest person in Hollywood — or its biggest liar? After all, we are talking about Dakota “I Love Limes” Johnson, who, when asked if it was ever fun to lie to the press, responded: “The most fun. The most fun.” (Which might explain why, during the infamous Madame Web press tour, she said she’d “always really loved Marvel movies,” only to later admit she’d seen “15 minutes of one.”) And then there’s her second Vanity Fair lie detector test, where she said she came back just to see how good she is at lying. She also confessed to lying during both interviews — without getting caught. So to answer our original question, honestly, who knows? But, Dakota, never change.

Welp.
Gigi Paris and Glen Powell

Look at the culture likely confirming what we already knew: There’s no such thing as a good guy. Not even a year after we (boldly) declared that Glen Powell was “the only thing the country can agree on,” his ex Gigi Paris opened up about those Sydney Sweeney rumors. For anyone who’s lost track of the will-they-won’t-they? saga: Powell and Paris split in 2023, the same year Anyone but You dropped. Now, on an episode of the Too Much podcast, the model — without naming names — said she first saw the speculation online, warned her partner that “the whole world is watching” and told him to “proceed with caution.” According to her, “that wasn’t received well” and things declined for six months, until she ended it. She claims her ex never shut down the cheating rumors — and may have even let them simmer to sell a movie. “The bare minimum of any relationship is to have your partner’s back,” she remarked. “You just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend’ … That’s all that needed to be said.” Paris added that the costars eventually admitted the buzz was all a PR stunt — at the expense of her relationship. So, how have Powell and Sweeney responded to the podcast? They haven’t. Though Powell previously acknowledged they played up the rumors to promote the film. Safe to say we’ll never look at the Condiment King the same way.

Pitbull fans, we admire your commitment to looking like Mr. Worldwide. Dale.

Need something to watch.
 Julianne Moore in Echo Valley

When your daughter appears at your doorstep covered in someone else’s blood, let’s just say “normal parenting” goes out the window. Written by the creator of Mare of Easttown comes Echo Valley, a twisty thriller starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney. In the Apple TV+ movie, Moore plays Kate, a grieving woman running a struggling horse farm in Pennsylvania. She’s barely hanging on — and that becomes even harder when her troubled, drug-addicted daughter (Sweeney) reappears, setting off a chain of events that forces Kate to confront just how far she’s willing to go to protect her child. With Fiona Shaw, Domhnall Gleeson, and Kyle MacLachlan rounding out the star-studded cast, expect secrets, suspense, and one very bumpy ride.

What’s the makeup-setting spray we like again?
Kopari Sunglaze Sheer Setting Mist Sunscreen SPF 50

Kopari Sunglaze Sheer Setting Mist Sunscreen SPF 50

Caroline, Senior Commerce Editor, back with another product I need you to know about. I’m well aware there are too many skincare items on the market — which is why I’m thrilled to introduce you to the best multitasker I’ve used recently. Is it a makeup-setting spray? A face sunscreen? A moisturizer? Friends, it’s all of the above. I’ve been applying it after I do my makeup in the morning, as a final layer of SPF, and then I’ve reapplied it throughout the day, both to top up my sun protection and give my skin an overall refresh. Meaning, it’s essentially the answer to the question of how you’re supposed to reapply SPF regularly — without messing up your makeup. Oh, and it contains hydrating hyaluronic acid, so it imparts a fresh, dewy glow. Bright, right?
